Eighteen years of February 4th posts, and this date has developed a personality. It's the day when things don't go according to plan, when you find yourself asking "what's next?" or "who's in?" or simply laying in someone's yard wondering if you're actually a penguin.
Looking back, there's a clear pattern here. In 2008, I was chasing secret ski spots and legendary powder days. By 2010, I was reminiscing about epic training loops and planning future adventures. 2011 brought that memorable penguin theory after nearly blacking out on hill repeats, complete with alien aircraft and everyone turning to coal except me with my white undershirt camouflage.
The theme continued through 2012's Bridger Range exploration, 2017's confusion over Bear Canyon trail legality, and 2018's honest admission about being stuck in neighborhood fat biking ruts. Even 2023 captured that restless energy with Blue wanting in while we explored on snowshoes.
2024 shifted to beaches and rogue waves, 2025 brought romantic Glacier Park sunsets, and now 2026 circles back to those familiar themes... technical difficulties, late starts, and finding calm on University Mountain despite everything going sideways.
February 4th seems to specialize in those moments when you're slightly off your game but push through anyway. Maybe that's what makes these posts work. They capture the real stuff, the days when the plan falls apart but something worthwhile happens regardless.
