July 29th: Wheels Keep Turning

12 moments from July 29, across the years

Twenty-three Julys of these entries and the thread never really changes, it just gets dustier and a little more self-aware. Back in 2003 I was posting hiking pictures from Bear Mountain and chasing a mountain bike race I hadn't even entered, which I then wrote up in Elks Run like a man proud of finishing something he didn't sign up for. A year later I was in Missoula, quoting a teenage Sam Schultz about singletrack in Shultz Talks About Trails, and by 2005 the Thursday Night Rides had become a whole culture, complete with Trout Slayer and Alden talking us into hike-a-bikes we had no business attempting.

Then came the road trips and the nerves, like the Galena Grinder Trip and the pre-race jitters of Nerves before the Butte 100. Some years I kept it simple, just an Explore post full of creek photos, or an honest confession in Lazy ass about needing to get off said ass. Later entries got quieter and stranger, from the rambling charm of The Livingston life to the deadpan minimalism of Gardiner is a shithole, a self-roast in Epiphany Unveiled, and a very modern tech tantrum resolved by dirt in 404 on Wheels.

Twenty-two years of July 29ths and the fix has never changed. When something breaks, digitally or otherwise, you throw a leg over a bike and let gravity sort it out.
