August 5th, A Long Ride Through Time

13 moments from August 5, across the years

Twenty-four years ago I was just chasing a groove with a morning run, no idea I'd still be chasing that same feeling on two wheels decades later. That's the thing about Groove, it started small and never really stopped.

Some years this date carries guilt, like missing Lucy and Niko at the airport in Ho Hum, Another Summer Day, while planning the next ride anyway. Other years it's smoke on the horizon and a hammer-fest through Woods Gulch, like Sidewinder, 2Larch, 3Larch, heat and burnt throats be damned. Then there's the anticipation before a backpacking trip into the Missions in Missions This Weekend, coffee brewing, gear spread across the floor.

Some years got weird in the best way, like a skunked dog and a solo canyon night in Can I Stay at Your Place?. Others stayed simple, dirt bikes and pizza with Mo in Constant, or a hard-fought descent in Ramshorn Adventure Day 3. Some years just left photos, like The Loft, or a quiet ride down Bear Fork Road, or a link to Natural Bridge.

More recently it's summits, like Atop Mineral Peak, hot rides that fry helmet straps in Thin Air Summer, and Mo grinding through snow in Pedal, Mo, Pedal!.

Twenty-three years of August 5ths, and the thread never breaks: get outside, keep moving, laugh about it later.
